The South County Truancy Interdiction Center’s mission is to decrease the amount of truancy among elementary, middle and high school students in Pinellas County. The St. Petersburg Police Department is sub-contracting the program through the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg. The program will decrease truancy by providing a place where law enforcement officers can have students processed and assessed if they are truant during school hours. The students will be dropped off at the center and assigned an attendance specialist who will contact the students' parents, the school and conduct an assessment. The program will work with the student and the family on the obstacles that are faced in the student's attendance; make referrals to community resources when necessary and provide follow-up. Students with more than five unexcused absences will be assigned a sub-contracted case manager through Family Resources, Inc. to work more intensively with the family and provide follow-up. The goal is to have the student increase their school attendance and not have any unexcused absences. The program center will service any student found truant from Pinellas County.
