The Protective Factors – Building Stronger Families

Did you know there are six characteristics that many parents naturally have, or have learned, that help them be their best? They are called Protective Factors, and you can help by nurturing and supporting these in anyone you know who is raising children.

  • Nurturing and attachment so children feel loved and secure
  • Parental resilience which allows parents to cope with life’s ups and downs
  • Social connections that serve as cheerleaders for parents (i.e., friends, neighbors, family, co-workers)
  • Concrete support in times of need so parents know where to go and who to ask for help
  • Knowledge of parenting and child development so parents know what to expect as a child grows up
  • Social and emotional competence of children which is how a child expresses feelings in a positive way

Real-Time Help For Families

The Family Services Initiative is a collective partnership of agencies and a proven prevention model that works. Trained professionals guide and partner with families to help overcome their challenges. Plus, resources are available for basic need items like food, beds/bedding, transportation, and rent/utility assistance.

Prevent Needless Deaths Campaign

In 2015, a group of committed partners joined JWB to tackle the three leading causes of preventable child deaths for young children: suffocation due to unsafe sleep practices, drowning, and abusive head trauma. Together, we joined Tampa Bay partners to launch the Prevent Needless Deaths Campaign, trained thousands on the campaign’s facts and safety tips, and created a more targeted effort aimed at preventing infant sleep-related deaths.
