JWB Announces Second 2025-2026 KidsFirst Award Winner

Jun 25, 2026

JWB’s mission of strengthening Pinellas County children and families simply could not be accomplished without those who work directly with families, so, for more than 30 years, JWB has recognized outstanding “boots on the ground” professionals each year with the KidsFirst Cooperman-Bogue Awards

JWB Interim CEO Karen Boggess recently presented the second KidsFirst Award of 2026 to Melissa Mapes, a VPK teacher for 29 years at the Gingerbread Preschool of Carillon. Melissa was also recognized at our June Board Meeting.

Melissa is the kind of teacher every child deserves—creative, compassionate, and all-in for kids. She knows early learning is about more than academics—it’s about building confidence, resilience, and a lasting love of learning.

Melissa creates a classroom where children feel safe and valued. Her students don’t just learn—they flourish. And the former students who return to share their successes are proof that the love, care, and excellence she gives children lasts a lifetime.

Her impact goes far beyond her classroom. Melissa is a trusted mentor, a calm leader, and a generous guide to fellow teachers. She has helped others grow their confidence, strengthen their practice, and advance in their careers.

Since beginning her career in 1986, Melissa has made a lasting difference for children and families across Pinellas County. She knows early learning is about more than academics—it is about building confidence, resilience, and a love of learning that lasts. Even her perfect attendance reflects the steady care she brings every single day!

Her legacy is extraordinary. Families have chosen the VPK program because of Melissa, and former students return to share their success—proof that the love, care, and excellence she gives children lasts a lifetime.
