Bernie McCabe is the Chief Prosecuting Officer for the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Florida, comprised of Pinellas and Pasco counties. He supervises over 160 appointed assistants who investigate and prosecute criminal and civil cases on behalf of the State of Florida. In his role as State Attorney, Mr. McCabe serves in an ex-officio capacity on the Juvenile Welfare Board and chairs the JWB Finance Committee.
A native Floridian, Mr. McCabe graduated with a Juris Doctor, Cum Laude from Stetson University College of Law in 1972, and began his career as an Assistant State Attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit that same year. He rose through the ranks as Division Director, Executive Assistant State Attorney, and Chief Assistant State Attorney before being elected State Attorney in 1992.
Mr. McCabe is a member of the national, state, and local bar associations, as well as a member of the National District Attorneys Association. He is an adjunct professor at Stetson University College of Law, chair of the Florida Violent Crime and Drug Control Council, and chair of the Pinellas County Substance Abuse Advisory Board. He serves as a member on the Board of Overseers at Stetson College of Law, the Pinellas and Pasco Public Safety Coordinating Councils, the Health and Human Services Coordinating Council, and the Suncoast Family YMCA. Mr. McCabe is a member of the Stetson Law Hall of Fame, Pinellas Police Standards Council, the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association, and is a past President of the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association.
